Marco Pantani of Italy leads Richard Virenque of France, overall leader Jan Ullrich of Germany and Bjarne Riis of Denmark as he climbs toward victory in the 13th stage of the Tour de France between Saint-Etienne, central France, and l’Alpe d’Huez in the French Alps in 1997. Riis later admitted using performance-enhancing drugs to win the Tour de France. Marco Pantani, reportedly depressed, died of cocaine poisoning in 2004.
